In the summer of 2015, our local Louisville Basketball Association donated two new adjustable basketball hoops. In the summer of 2016, with support from the Louisville Board of Education, Community Business, Family and Alumni contributions, Phase One of the Playground Project was completed. We were able to implement an Early Childhood Play Area, Outdoor Classroom and replace the previous blacktop with a new concrete surface that is surrounded by the basketball hoops donated by the Louisville Basketball association and two additional new hoops.
We are now pursuing funding for Phase Two of the project. Phase two includes updates to the Elementary Playground equipment, creating accessibility to and around the Elementary Equipment, adding a field for ball play and increasing the green space surrounding the playground. Ideally, we would additionally like to add a shade structure to the basketball area. The next phase of the project is going to take longer than anticipated. The district has identified a need to evaluate the entrance to the school. One area that needs to be addressed is the slope to the playground. The district is researching the possibility of utilizing an engineer or landscape architect to assist in making a plan rectify the current entrance, sidewalk and slope. The changes to the entrance to the elementary school and the slope to the playground will likely change the play space. We feel it would be the most financially responsible to have the design and plan for the entrance completed to then maximize the use of the playground space. Ideally, the elementary entrance and playground update could be completed simultaneously, if we have secured all of the funding needed for the playground. Our current plan is to complete all the remaining portions of the playground project in the Summer of 2018.
